How to Wirelessly and Automatically Back Up Your iPhone Photos

September 1st, 2010

Syncing your iPhone doesn’t backup your photos, and if you’re not in constant sync you could easily lose them in a crash. Here’s how to jailbreak your iPhone and set up an automatic photo-syncing process.

Necessity is the mother of invention as usual. Of course, I didn’t create any of the software to do this, I just put them all together to make them work for me. Props to TurboFTP for their awesome FTP client. You will also need Google’s Picasa Photo Manager which is free (except for additional space if needed in your Google account).

Now, before you get entrenched in this, be aware, you will need to have already jailbroken your iPhone (see Spirit, ZiPhone, or keep an eye on the jailbreak tag page) so that you can SSH into it…and for the love of God, CHANGE YOUR SSH PASSWORD WHEN YOU DO JAILBREAK YOUR IPHONE! {Gentle word of warning :) } Along with the usual disclaimer: These instructions are provided at your own risk and no warranty as to their functionality is either expressed or implied and I will not be held responsible for any actions arising thereof. Now, where were we? Oh yes….

The only reason that I even had to do this is because I am too lazy to connect my iPhone to my PC and back up my photos over iTunes. Well, it ended up biting me in the ass because my iPhone had to be hard reset because some tinkering on my part and I lost 4 months of photos and videos! Oh well, lesson learned. Regardless, I knew that I still wouldn’t connect my iPhone routinely to upload my pictures to my PC. I searched on the Internet to see if there were anything out there that could do this for me and I couldn’t find anything. Here is what I did so that my photos are backed up every 2 hours to the web.

Step 1

Download and install TurboFTP. It allows secure FTP connections to your jailbroken iPhone and has an additional function that I will mention later. Also, download and install Google Picasa.

Step 2

Open TurboFTP and click the “Scheduling Clock” at the top of the screen. We are going to make a backup schedule and tell it where to place the files.
How to Wirelessly and Automatically Back Up Your iPhone Photos

Step 3

Click the “Add” button to add a scheduled task.
How to Wirelessly and Automatically Back Up Your iPhone Photos

Step 4

Enter the “Site” as your iPhone IP address (If you haven’t assigned your iPhone a static IP address on your network, do it now). Also, set the port as “22″ just like in the screenshot below.

Your Remote Folder for pictures on your iPhone should be the same as mine: /private/var/mobile/Media/DCIM

Your Local Folder can be wherever you want to store the pictures after they are copied to your workstation from your iPhone. Preferably a folder within your “My Pictures” folder.

The Launch Time will default to the current time.

Set the Repeat Task to however often you want your iPhone photos to be backed up to your workstation.
How to Wirelessly and Automatically Back Up Your iPhone Photos

Step 5

Choose the Synchronization Direction as “DOWNLOAD.”

The Synchronization Scheme should be set to “Add only new files to destination”. This is the part that in was mentioning earlier. TurboFTP allows for the option to compare the photo files on your iPhone with your workstation and only copy the latest files…Cool!

Check the box for “Include subfolders.”

How to Wirelessly and Automatically Back Up Your iPhone Photos

Step 6

Click the “Excludes Filters” and enter the following exclusions below just as they are and click “OK.”
How to Wirelessly and Automatically Back Up Your iPhone Photos

Step 7

Then click the “Include Filters” and input the settings below and click “OK”. *Please note: even though these files will be copied to your workstation, they will not be sent to the web later. Only JPG’s will be synced to the web.
How to Wirelessly and Automatically Back Up Your iPhone Photos

Step 8

Click “OK” on the “Schedule Task Settings” window.

Go ahead and test the copy/backup by clicking the “Run Now” button on the Task Scheduler screen.

If all is successful, the FTP client will have connected to your iPhone, compared the files to what is in the current directory on your workstation and copied the files to it that did not already exist.

If that didn’t work for you, recheck all of the steps and screenshots above to ensure that your IP address and port are correct as well as the synchronization settings.

Still, not working? Rinse and repeat.

Step 9

Now comes the easy part.

Remember in the beginning of the steps where you installed Picasa? Oh, you didn’t do that yet? Ok, well do it now…ready?

You will need to have a Google account of some sort in order to upload the files to your Picasa account so make sure those settings are in there.

We’re going to have to rely on some common sense at this point. This is where you need to setup Picasa to recognize the directories where you are copying the iPhone photos. Most likely, Picasa has already located your “My Pictures” directory and it is listed in Picasa.

If that is the case, you will need to set up sync capabilities to the web from within Picasa. Do this by toggling the “Sync to Web” to “On”.

Occasionally, as you take more pictures with your iPhone, new directories will invariably be created on your local workstation. Although TurboFTP will see this and create the new directories, Picasa will not sync the new directories unless specifically told to do so. So you may have to occasionally set the sync option to “On” for any new directories created in the future.

Step 10

So that’s it! There you have it. Now you can take comfort in knowing that your iPhone photos are not only being backed up locally to your workstation but they are also being synced offsite. Sure, this does rely on WiFi within your own home, but it’s what works for me and I’m quite happy with it. I wish that there were a way to upload any new photos via 3G and I’m sure that someone’s already thought of it and working on it. Hope this is helpful to someone else out there that has run into the same issues as I have with protecting their iPhone photos!

And the winner is…..

August 30th, 2010

There’s a lot to like about the Nikon D5000. It takes the great image quality of the D90, not to mention its HD movie mode and AF system, repackages it into a D60-styled body with midrange-friendly controls, and completes it with a fully-articulated screen on the back. It’s a compelling combination of features and pitched just right for photographers who’ll want guidance and a camera that grows with them.

It’s not all good news of course: the D5000 is relatively large and heavy for an entry-level model, its viewfinder a tad smaller than the competition, the screen’s hinge position reduces flexibility when mounted on a tripod, the movie mode (like all DSLRs with the facility) has a number of operational caveats, the user interface can be slow for experienced users, and Nikon continues to sell its RAW conversion and remote control software as optional extras. There’s also no battery-grip, and like earlier midrange-level Nikon DSLRs, there’s no built-in motor to autofocus older lenses which don’t have their own AF motors.

These are minor downsides for its target market though. The biggest issue facing the D5000 is it replaces a series of midrange DSLRs which were simply much cheaper. Don’t get us wrong, the D5000 represents decent value for what it offers. The D5000 may offer much more than either model, but the DSLR beginners it’s aiming for are often on a tighter budget and many will consider older models in the Nikon range or rivals.

Speaking of rivals, the D5000 also has two very tough ones in the form of Canon’s EOS 500D / Rebel T1i and the Olympus E-620. Each has a number of pros and cons .

If you’re looking for a midrange DSLR though with powerful features and image quality to match, the Nikon D5000 is a great choice, and comes Highly Recommended. If it really does replace both the D80 and D90 though, Nikon now has a gap at the truly affordable end of the range.

Want Aero Glass on Ubuntu? I do!

August 25th, 2010

Linux: W7 Theme is a free script that skins your Linux desktop with a familiar Windows 7 look and feel.

Linux has a highly configurable GUI, but if you long for the more well-known Windows interface, this script will do a remarkably good job of making Ubuntu look like Windows 7. You can download either a GNOME and KDE version, as well as one of a few Firefox themes to make your browser look more Windows-y too. You’ll need to do a bit of Terminal work to install the theme, though if your copy and paste skills are up to snuff, you should be fine. It’s pretty handy if, say, you have a relative who needs to use Linux but is confused by the interface (or you just really, really like Aero Glass).

A Hand-Engraving Could Make Your Old iPhone Feel Beautiful Again

August 24th, 2010

Is your chubby old iPhone jealous of the iPhone 4’s slender body? Perhaps it’s time for some aesthetic surgery. After all, look at how gorgeous this old iPhone looks after getting its bezel hand-engraved. Apparently it took eight hours to engrave this section of the iPhone’s bezel by hand, but it seems like time well-spent. Truly beautiful.

Want Android OS on your IPHONE? Nothing more simple ;-)

August 20th, 2010

Step One
To perform these instructions you must first jailbreak your iPhone. You can find instructions on how to do that using the iClarified Jailbreak Wizard. It is strongly recommended that you use RedSn0w to jailbreak rather then a userland jailbreak such as JailbreakMe.

After jailbreaking your iPhone make sure to open Cydia and make sure your installed packages are up to date.

Step Two
Download the latest version of iPhoDroid from here. The download link is at the bottom left of the page.

Step Three
Double click the downloaded zip to extract the application. Then double click the application icon to launch it.

Step Four
Make sure your iPhone is connected to the computer via a USB cable then press the Shoot! button.

Step Five
iPhoDroid will then extract the touch driver and transfer the cache, system, and data to the iPhone.

You will be informed that your iPhone is being placed into Recovery Mode.

Your iPhone will now show you an Apple logo and an Android logo. Use the volume buttons to select the Install option at the lower left hand corner of the screen then press the Home button.

Some verbose mode text will appear on the screen as Android is installed. Once complete your iPhone will boot into the Android operating system.

Apple, Android control the smartphone market

August 20th, 2010

Another analyst is reporting Android sales are on fire. Shipments of Android phones will grow by 561 percent in 2010 and take nearly 25 percent of the smartphone market. Additionally, Apple iPhone shipments will overtake RIM smartphones later this year, according to Digitimes Research.

In the second-half of 2010, Apple will have 15.6 percent of the smartphone market, passing RIM’s 15 percent. For the full year, however, the BlackBerry-maker will lead the Cupertino, Calif. company 16.4 percent to 15.2 percent, according to the research firm.

Smartphones are 20 percent of the overall mobile phone market. Smartphone shipments will exceed 280 million handsets this year, a 57 percent increase over last year’s 178 million.

Nokia, although it will remain the leading mobile phone manufacturer, will see its share of the smartphone market continue to shrink. The Finnish company will control 32.6 percent of the market in the second half of 2010, or 35 percent for the entire year, according to the research.

Today’s number reflect a growing trend for Android reported earlier this week. According to Gartner, sales of Android-based phones rose 50 percent in the second-quarter, putting the Google OS ahead of Apple’s IOS-based units, such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Although Apple’s percentage rose, it was by a smaller amount – 1.2 percent.

“Apple’s sales would have been higher if it had not had to face tight inventory management in preparation for the arrival of the iPhone 4 at the end of the second quarter of 2010,” analyst Carolina Milanesi said. A wider global rollout of the iPhone 4 should keep Apple’s sales juggernaut going throughout the second half of this year, according to the analyst.

Pictures of Elusive White iPhone 4 Leaked From China

August 11th, 2010

Pictures of a white iPhone 4 in the wild have been leaked out of China.

The white iPhone 4 was apparently sneaked out of the factory inside the box for a black iPhone 4 and taken to Hong Kong.

The white iPhone 4 has suffered several delays, and is due to ship “later this year,” according to a curt statement from Apple. The device was originally supposed to ship in with the black iPhone 4, but has pushed back twice for reasons unknown. There has been speculation that the white iPhone leaks light from its LCD.

The pictures below who a 32GB model and include details like the headphone jack connector and dock connector.

A Full Metal Jacket for iPhone 4s

August 11th, 2010

After trying his hand at iPhone 3G and 3GS cases, designer Ryan Glasgow has come up with a brushed-steel iPhone 4 case. No clue on whether it acts as a Bumper and improves signal, but at $95 I’d hope so.

A nifty addition is the elastic band on the front-flip, that can be used for holding notes or bank cards. The small slot on the front flap allows for incoming calls to be displayed, and as it’s made from stainless steel it’s ultra-thin so doesn’t add much bulk to the phone.

Interestingly, Glasgow addresses the reception issues, by saying that he’ll refund people’s money if they find the case affects their signal.
